Opera Instruments

 

For and together with the orchestra of Deutsche Oper Berlin, I developed a format that introduces orchestral instruments to children as storytellers — it's about what these instruments can do: When does a clarinet whisper, when does a brass section roar? At which point in a score does the trumpet carry fear, the cello carry longing, the harp carry the vastness of a forest?

Each episode takes one instrument and turns it into the main character of its own story — using real musical examples from the repertoire that show how composers deliberately use that instrument to create a specific feeling.

The format translates something usually only experienced in the concert hall into a language children understand from the start: music not as theory, but as feeling with an instrument as its voice.

Für und gemeinsam mit dem Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin habe ich ein Format entwickelt, das Kindern Orchesterinstrumente als Geschichtenerzähler näherbringt – es geht darum, was diese Instrumente leisten können: Wann flüstert eine Klarinette, wann dröhnt die Blechbläsergruppe? An welcher Stelle in einer Partitur vermittelt die Trompete Angst, das Cello Sehnsucht und die Harfe die Weite eines Waldes?

Jede Folge widmet sich einem Instrument und macht es zur Hauptfigur einer eigenen Geschichte – anhand echter Musikbeispiele aus dem Repertoire, die zeigen, wie Komponisten dieses Instrument bewusst einsetzen, um ein bestimmtes Gefühl zu erzeugen. Das Format übersetzt etwas, das man normalerweise nur im Konzertsaal erlebt, in eine Sprache, die Kinder von Anfang an verstehen: Musik nicht als Theorie, sondern als Gefühl, mit einem Instrument als Stimme.
